Rules

 

1. P.A.S. France, in collaboration with "perKumania" festival, announces an International Marimba Competition from November 24-29, 2009 in Paris (Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional).

 

2. The Competition includes two categories of candidates :

- Category 1: candidates until 25 years old  (born after Nov. 24, 1983).

- Category 2: candidates 14 years old until 20 years old  (born between Nov. 24, 88 - Nov. 24, 95).

Candidates under 20 can apply for Category 1 if they wish. It is also possible to apply in both categories.

 

3. The jury will be composed of personalities in the musical world and marimba specialists of various nationalities. The jury members will be announced on May 1st, 2009 (at the latest) to all registered contestants and anyone else who inquires.

 

4. The Competition will proceed in three rounds: Preliminary, Qualifying, and Final. Each round will be open to the public. The repertoire for each round follows these rules. The Preliminary will take place November 25 - 26, the Qualifying on November 27, and the Final on November 29, 2009. The results will be announced at the end of each round. The administration of the Competition will do its best to make possible a short practice time before each round, on a similar instrument than the instrument played for the competition. Two individual practice sessions before the first round will be on November 23 – 24, according each candidate’s performance time. This practice time will be fixed according the number of candidates. A short rehearsal with the piano (second round) will be organized before the second round for all qualified candidates. A rehearsal with the ensemble will be organized for the finalists.

 

5. The jury of the competition is sovereign, and its decisions cannot be discussed. Any communication between the candidates and/or their professor and the members of the jury is not permitted.

The jury can stop the performer at any time due to performance time requirements or for any other reason. The jury is not required to explain why the performance was stopped.

 

6. Registrations will be accepted from April 1st to July 31st, 2009. Please submit either a registration form, or the same information on plain paper:  Last name, First name, Date of birth, Address, Telephone and fax numbers, P.A.S membership number (if member), E-mail, Name and address of parent or guardian (for minors), Name and address of current school, Name of teacher, Category of application, Repertoire selected for each round, Make and model of preferred marimba.

Each registration form must be sign by the candidate (or his/her parent or guardian) and validated by the school where the candidate studies. Payment of the registration fee (exclusively in euros without any charge for PAS France) should be attached to the registration form. Incomplete forms, or applications without payment, will not be accepted.

Payment should be only by money order / transfer or by cheque in euros payable on a French bank. PAS France doesn’t accept any credit card payment.

7. The registration fee (non-refundable) is 70 euros per candidate and category. This fee includes participation in the Competition and free access to the festival "perkumania" 2009 only on November 28-29 (Day Pass, except for evening concerts).

 

8. The maximum number candidates will be 80 (total, in both categories). Therefore, the order is which registrations are received will be noted, and acceptance will be based on this order..

 

9. Each candidate will receive a confirmation of his/her registration 3 – 4 weeks after registration reception and, in September, an individual schedule for the Preliminary round and practice time. Each candidate will need to produce identification in order to participate in each round.

 

10. The organization of the Competition will not pay for candidates’ accommodations, travel expenses or local transport expenses of the candidates. However, information and assistance with lodging will be provided by the administration of the Competition.

 

11. The marimbas available to the candidates for the Competition will be from at least three different companies. Exact information on the available marimba will be provided by May 1st, 2009 (at the latest) to all registered contestants and anyone else who inquires. Candidates are free to use their personal instrument, if they take full responsibility for it (including loading and moving it), and with the proviso of informing the organization of the Competition before July 31, 2009.

Candidates who will use their personal instruments for the competition will have the same individual practice time than other candidates.

 

12. Prizes and awards to the winners will be donated by the Percussive Arts Society, Journées de la Percussion and various companies. A detailed list of these awards and prizes will be communicated by July 1st, 2009 to all registered candidates and anyone else who inquires.

 

13. The registered candidates must agree to accept the awards they are given at the end of the Competition. They must be present at the Awards Ceremony to receive them personally. If they are not present, those prizes and awards will revert to the administration of the Competition. The Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday November 29, 2009 in the afternoon.

 

14. Winners and awarded candidates will agree to perform at the Winners Concert, if requested, on November 29, 2009 (end of the day).

 

15. Registration in the Competition requires acceptance of the results. The organization of the competition holds the power to exclude any candidate who does not respect the results or awards, or who, by his/her behaviour, would harm the good intentions of the competition and equity between the candidates, or who is in any way disruptive to the process.
